New snow on the mountains
and the hills just
call and call
for you to climb them.

Photobucket

Out here I am so aware
of the scale of things;
the throbbing orange life
of lichen on rock,
the mountains in every direction,
the sweep and rise
to sky.

Photobucket

That we can just
take an hour
before evening
and be here.

Makes my heart
happy.

farm notes

It was 27 degrees here when we woke up this morning. Then it cooled right down to 25 degrees before it started to warm up. Even the hoop house can't rally over digits like that. The basil is no more. The eggplants look sorry. Tomatoes and peppers are touch and go at this point. Cucumbers will be remembered fondly. (Sigh).

The blow is softened, though, by those that like it cold; radishes are looking good, spinach is kicking, chard and kale look (and taste) better than ever. It's salad season. Again.

And in other farm news, we pulled up a few onions,

Photobucket

And these ladies...

Photobucket

have begun to lay.

Photobucket

We continue to cut, blanche, can, freeze....oh, and eat. Already opened the first jar of this year's salsa.

more than enough

Photobucket

The other day we went to the woods
with a plan.

Photobucket
We needed six or seven
small lodgepole pines
to build a tipi for the girls.

Photobucket

Photobucket

Of course we found more than enough.

Photobucket

And a fire ring
beside a stream.

Photobucket

Now...to build a tipi
or two.

p.s. A friend told me that she had been unable to write comments on my posts - and I LOVE getting comments. So I may have(hopefully) fixed this. If you are so inclinded to comment, please do; it's nice to know you're out there!

three things

The sky's a bruised gray;
rain and wind has kept us in
all afternoon.

She finished off the last watermelon,
softball sized and pale pink inside
planted too late in the season.

Photobucket

I've kept the woodstove burning low
and when her hair
was dry we tried a braid.
Her first.
